I use the Hamsa in so much of my art and jewelry. I love it not only because of its popularity in the Middle East, and its familiarity as a symbol I saw frequently growing up in Israel; but because it is a beautiful and universal shape. The Hamsa offers protection in many religions, for Christians it represents the hand of Mary, Jesus’ mother, for Arabs it is the hand of Fatima, Muhammad’s daughter,
and for Jews it is the hand of Miriam, Moses’ sister.
It can also be an non-religious and secular luck charm, especially now as it is becoming increasingly popular in fashion. I just saw a display of Hamsa necklaces at Topshop!
